Position description

The Teacher Preparation Program in UC Merced Extension Education Programs invites qualified applicants to apply for the University Mentors of Teacher Candidates position for the academic year 2024/2025.

We seek applicants with expertise in teaching linguistically and culturally diverse students and mentoring or supervising teachers or teacher candidates. The number of positions varies each year, depending on instructional needs. These are part-time, contract positions appointed per semester. Reappointment, if any, is based solely on instructional need.

Supervisors are expected to provide high-quality mentorship and supervision according to the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing and program requirements and submit reports and required documentation according to deadlines.

Specifically, the Supervisor of Teacher Education is responsible for the following:

* Attend Teacher Preparation Program mentor meetings as scheduled, usually two per semester;
* Attend a scheduled orientation and training event;
* Conduct a minimum of six (6) observations of classroom instruction per teacher candidate during public school hours, typically during morning hours;
* Complete, collect, and submit all required documents for student teaching according to program deadlines;
* Conduct weekly communication with candidates in person, by phone, video conference, and/or via e-mail;
* May contribute to the placement of candidates in approved local school districts;
* Contributes to orientation with mentor teachers and principals about teacher education program requirements and maintains ongoing communication with district personnel throughout the candidate's placement;
* Maintains current knowledge of effective supervision approaches, such as cognitive coaching, adult learning theory, and current content-specific pedagogy and instructional practices; and,
* Communicate with the Education Programs Director, Teacher Preparation Program Assistant Director, and Credential Analyst to address student questions and concerns.
* Student-teacher candidates are given a course evaluation each term. This initiates the TPP administrators' assessment of the course and program effectiveness. The TPP administration will share course evaluation feedback with the instructor and UC Mentors. Professional Development opportunities may be suggested and/or required for continuous program improvement.
* As part of the University's efforts to prevent and respond to sexual violence and sexual harassment, each instructor and UC Mentor will be assigned a training course required of staff at all UC locations. This course meets the requirements of 2 CCR 11024, California Government Code 12950.1, AB 1825/2053, 34 CFR 668.46 Violence Against Women Act, and UC Policies on Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment, Abusive Conduct, and Anti-Discrimination.
